Passion, Performance, and Progress define our mission at the Edo State Sports Commission. We’re dedicated to cultivating a vibrant sports culture within Edo State, where athletes of all levels can excel, spectators can relish thrilling moments, and our community can come together to celebrate the spirit of sportsmanship.

The Commission was created to develop and administer sports in the State. It was formerly known as the Edo State Sports Council. It became the Edo State Sports Commission through an act dated 18th August 2021. It has a 7-man board which was inaugurated on the 11th of March, 2022. The administrative headquarters is located at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City. 34 sports associations are operating under the commission.

To attain excellence and positively impact the lives of Edo people through Sports participation, development, and business. To develop and implement programs that promotes sports participation, talent identification, and high-performance training in Edo State.

Our Objectives

  •  Encourage and facilitate participation in sports and physical activities across all age groups and demographics within Edo State.
  • Increase awareness of the benefits of sports for physical health, mental well-being, and social cohesion.
  • Identify and nurture talented athletes from grassroots to elite levels, providing them with opportunities for development and progression.
  • Implement programs and initiatives focused on talent identification, athlete support, and high-performance training.
  • Develop and maintain modern sports facilities, venues, and infrastructure across Edo State to support training, competitions, and events.
  • Ensure accessibility and inclusivity of sports facilities for athletes, coaches, and the community.
  • Promote a culture of excellence and achievement in sports through coaching, training, and support services for athletes and coaches.
  • Facilitate participation in regional, national, and international competitions, representing Edo State with pride and distinction.
  • Invest in grassroots sports development programs to identify and nurture talent from a young age, building a strong foundation for future success.
  • Provide resources, training, and mentorship for coaches, teachers, and community leaders involved in grassroots sports programs.
  • Advocate for the role of sports and physical activity in promoting health, well-being, and disease prevention within the community.
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals, educators, and government agencies to promote active lifestyles and sports participation.
  • Engage with local communities, schools, clubs, and organizations to promote sports participation, volunteerism, and community development.
  • Organize community sports events, outreach programs, and initiatives to foster social inclusion and cohesion.
  • Collaborate with educational institutions, research organizations, and sports science experts to support research and innovation in sports science, coaching, and athlete development.
  • Provide educational opportunities and resources for athletes, coaches, and sports administrators to enhance their knowledge and skills.
  • Establish partnerships and collaborations with government agencies, sports federations, corporate sponsors, NGOs, and other stakeholders to maximize the impact of sports development initiatives.
  • Pool resources, expertise, and networks to achieve common goals and objectives in promoting sports excellence and participation in Edo State.
  • Promote fair play, sportsmanship, and integrity in sports, emphasizing the importance of ethical behavior, respect, and inclusivity.
  • Implement policies and programs to prevent doping, corruption, and other forms of misconduct, ensuring a clean and transparent sports environment.

Functions of the ESSC
